Angora Goats

Angora goats, once highly guarded from export by the Sultan of Turkey, were first imported to this area in the mid-to-late 1800's. They produce the long, silky fiber known as mohair. Angora goats thrive in this part of Texas, and even with a recent decline in production, it remains the leading producer of mohair in the United States.

We gather goats by horseback twice a year for shearing, once beginning in July and once beginning in January. Before shearing, they're first sorted by sex, age, and quality of hair. After being shorn, they're drenched and then returned to pasture.
